Diatoms biology
We are studying the ecology and biology of marine diatoms.
Diatoms are microscopic algae that play a fundamental role in marine ecosystems and the global carbon cycle. Encased in intricate silica cell walls, these single-celled organisms are responsible for roughly 20% of the oxygen we breathe—comparable to the contribution of all the world’s rainforests combined. Beyond their ecological importance, diatoms are fascinating from a biological perspective, exhibiting diverse shapes, complex cellular processes, and remarkable adaptability to environmental changes. By studying their ecology, physiology, and molecular biology, we aim to uncover the mechanisms behind their success and better understand their role in ocean health and biogeochemical cycles.
